“Believe and act as if they were impossible to fail”
It’s time for us to protect our planet against global warming . I would like to share some important basic information regarding this biggest threat to our beautiful planet which all of us should be aware of.
Global warming is the rise in temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. It’s said that by the time a baby born today is 80 years old, the world will be 6 and a half degrees warmer than it is now. This increase in temperature is caused by the Greenhouse gases. They include:
- water vapour
- carbon dioxide
- methane
- nitrous oxide
- chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
They are all natural gases, but extra greenhouses gases can be made by humans from pollution. Global warming can result in the following:
- Melting glaciers, early snowmelt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West.
- Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico.
- Warmer sea surface temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
- Forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests and more mosquito-borne diseases.
- Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction.
There are ways you can help cut greenhouse gases and help stop global warming.
They are simple things, but can make a difference if everyone does them!
-
Drive less
-
Switch lights off when you’re not in the room
-
Recycle more and buy recycled items
-
Properly inflated tires mean good gas mileage. For each gallon of gas saved, 20 pounds of carbon dioxide are also not produced
-
Use less hot water
-
Avoid products with a lot of packaging
-
Adjust your thermostat. Keeping your thermostat at 68 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer not only helps with your energy bills, but it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well.
-
Plant a tree. A single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
-
Turn off electronic devices when not in use
-
Don’t leave the TV or video on standby.
-
Stay informed. Use the Earth 911 Web site to help stay informed about environmental issues, and share your knowledge with others.
The biggest cause of global warming is due to the carbon dioxide released . One of the simplest method in preventing global warming is to plant more trees which I’m sure all of us can do. It is also important for us to stop trees from being axed. All of us know that it is very simple to cut them down but it takes years for them to grow. I see so many trees being destroyed every day in the name of ‘widening roads’ and for construction purposes. We don’t seem to really understand the importance of our green friends. Are there any ways by which cities can grow and at the same time there will be no felling of trees ?? We need to save trees at any cost .
Tree planting can halt global warming :
-
In 50 years one tree recycles more than $37,000 worth of water, provides $31,000 worth of erosion control, $62,000 worth of air pollution control, and produces $37,000 worth of oxygen.
-
Two mature trees provide enough oxygen for a family of four.
-
Trees help reduce the “greenhouse effect” by absorbing CO2.
-
Forest planting is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing CO2.
-
By cooling the air and ground around them, the shade from trees helps cool the Earth’s temperature.
-
Trees are good noise barriers, making a city and neighborhood quieter.
-
Trees help prevent city flooding by catching raindrops and offsetting runoff caused by buildings and parking lots.
-
Hospital patients heal faster, require shorter stays and less painkillers if room windows face trees.
-
A tree-line buffer between fields and streams helps remove farming pollutants before they reach the water.
-
Well placed trees help cut energy costs and consumption by decreasing air conditioning costs 10-50% & reducing heating costs as much as 4-22%.
-
Trees are the longest living and largest living organisms on Earth.
-
In deserts, leaves absorb moisture from the dew and frost of the cool nights and release it to cool the air during the warm days.
-
Trees enhance the aesthetics of our environment. Their grandeur, tenacity, and beauty are probably the most enjoyable aspect of trees.
-
Tree bark and fruit have many medicinal properties, which are still being discovered.
-
Birds and animals use trees for their homes and shelter and as a source of food.
If trees are replanted , greenhouse gases are lowered. The temperature will not continue to rise and sea level will not rise. If more and more trees are planted they remove carbon dioxide from the air and replenish oxygen. There is absolutely no money required. Please help ourselves to have a green, healthy and a better tomorrow !

Aaaah !!! It feels great to have finally read ” The Google Story”-published in 2005. I know I’m late ….But, better late than never !
It’s just unbelievable how young, intelligent, dedicated, hardworking, sincere, the co-founders of Google were when they came out with the Google search engine. It is truly inspiring to learn about their accomplishments so early in life.
It motivates all the young minds to think big and to execute their dreams into reality.
As a Biotechnology student, their work that’s being carried out in the field of Molecular biology and Genetics is remarkable to me. These work could foster important breakthrough in the areas of medicine, science and technology.
A day might come when we can actually Google our genes, predict the possibilities of occurrences of diseases with the help of the gene sequences and cure diseases by personalized medications. Isn’t it just “____” ?!! I have no words to describe….
This book indeed has boosted my spirits, taught me to think out of the box !! and to go ahead and make a difference !
” The only way to have success is to have lots of failures first”
Thanks to vacations this time which provided me an opportunity to try to rediscover myself as I was completely lost amidst the hectic schedule all these years.
As I was sitting at home with absolutely no job to perform and nothing at all to study, strange questions started arising in my mind.Questions which were never thought of before. These queries have kept me wondering even today.
What is the actual reason behind our existence on Earth? Having been born as a human being, what are the primary duties that should be performed by us?Are we here just to get education, earn money, earn fame, get married,to look after our children and finally perish one day?? I remember asking some of my friends about their plans after getting a degree. Many would tell me-” Now that I will hold a degree, I will work in order to earn money and then settle down (marriage)”. Does this satisfy the reason for our existence? It is certainly something else. But what???
I slowly tried to recall several incidents that are a part of my life. Some which made me smile and others which left me sobbing. However both these types of incidents have taught me so many valuable things. Life to me is a dream of realistic complexities ! One important lesson that I have learnt is to be a neutral headed person. I have learnt not to get too excited when happiness comes my way and not to feel dejected by the obstacles or hurdles.
Another question that occurred was-’What is destiny?’. When I see or read about successful people in TV or newspaper, I ask myself-” Is destiny everything? Are they successful because they are destined to be that way?”
I would like to mention an example here. I sometimes prepared very hard for my exams . In spite of all the hard work I ended up getting low scores. I hardly prepared sometimes and ended up getting good scores. So what could be the reason for this? Is this because I sometimes was destined to get bad scores in spite of my hard work and other times where I was destined to get high scores in spite of no hard work???Another example I can think of right now is about ‘whizkids’. They are just amazing ! Two year old can point out different countries on a world map! A twelve year old could get through degree exam !! What can we call this?? Don’t tell me that the kid prepared for twelve years to give his/her degree exam !!!
The other day I was reading” WINGS OF FIRE”-an autobiography of our dearest former President of India Dr.A P J Abdul Kalam. I read about his then desire to join the Indian Air Force but in vain. Later he met a Swamiji to seek his advice on this unsuccessful attempt. Swamiji told Dr.Kalam to accept his destiny and go ahead in life. Swamiji said” What you are destined to become is not revealed to you now but it is predetermined.Forget this failure,as it was essential to lead you to your destined path”.What a wonderful saying !!
Maybe this is known as ‘luck’ in other word. Is ‘Karma’ related to destiny? If yes in what way? What about life after death?…
These queries of mine never seem to stop !! so are my efforts to understand the mystery behind life !!
NOTE: Kindly excuse me if any sort of mistakes are found in my writing . I am sure to finding answers to all my queries ( many of them not mentioned) as I still have a very loooong way to go!!
